Tenterden

Spend the day in the charming country town of Tenterden.  This market town is celebrated as the ‘Jewel of the Weald’, one of two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the borough.  Explore the glorious scenery of these areas on the walking routes that cross the county and take yourself on a tour of the vineyards that flourish in Kent’s favourable climate.  Tenterden offers fascinating history, a wealth of architecture, family fun and excellent boutique shopping.

There’s no better way to start the day than traveling through the beautiful countryside on the Kent and East Sussex Railway.  Trains wind their way through the magnificent High Weald, stopping at Rolvenden, Wittersham and Northiam en-route to Bodiam in East Sussex, where the line terminates in the shadow of the splendid Bodiam Castle.

Next door to the Kent and East Sussex Railway and nestled deep in the Heart of the ‘Garden of England’ sits the Old Dairy Taproom.  With it’s very own taproom and shop you can enjoy local, tradition and craft beers.

Only a 3 minute walk from the Kent and East Sussex Railway is the fascinating Tenterden and District Museum. Dip into 1,000 years of history from shipbuilding and the 1449 Town Charter to the Twentieth century.  Discover history in six rooms of exhibitions all houses in a beautiful Kentish building originally built in 1870.

A great market town located in the heart of the weald, Tenterden boasts a vibrant high street with many independent businesses. Recognised for its picturesque tree-lined heritage high street, Tenterden is the perfect place to wander and enjoy a unique retail offer provided by local family businesses that have been in the town for generations. In the winter the towns’ historic buildings offer the perfect retreat and in the summer, sit outside and watch the world go by.

Just a two mile drive from Tenterden is Chapel Down Winery located at Smallhythe.  Chapel Down is England’s leading wine producer offering a world-class range of sparkling and still wines. A guided tour followed by tastings is a must.

A stones throw from Chapel Down Winery is Smallhythe Place.  This early 16th century house once belonged to Victorian actress Ellen Terry and contains many of her personal items. As you walk through Smallhythe you’ll learn about Ellen Terry’s extraordinary career and unconventional private life. You’ll be entertained by a diverse programme of productions in the theatre and garden, with performances throughout the year.
